Audient® EVO Control Integration

Smaart v9.1 includes integrated gain and phantom power control for the Audient EVO® series interfaces. Roland® OctaCapture and Smaart IO users will already be familiar with these controls from those devices -- Smaart’s Input Meters view (View > Input Meters or [Shift] + [E]) are used to control the EVO devices directly from Smaart. The EVO integration is identical for each of EVO device (4, 8, 16), and will only vary by available input and output channels. Please note that Smaart v9 does not support gain tracking with the Audient EVO SP8 device at this time.

NOTE: Before connecting your Audient® EVO interface to your computer for the first time, install the latest driver for your operating system from Audient's website. The EVO control program must be launched before Smaart for the gain, phantom power, and gain tracking controls to display. If you close Smaart, you must also close and the reopen EVO Control to re-establish control.

(On Windows, please install the driver as an Administrator)

Smaart will adjust SPL calibration offset based on changes made using the gain control via Smaart's input meters (accessed via View > Input Meters), provided that the Gain Tracking check box located under the Level column in Input Config is checked. The accuracy of these adjustments may vary from device to device, in a typical range within a maximum error of about +/- 1 dB from 0-50 when calibrated at a gain setting of 25 dB.

NOTE: EVO devices have 58 dB of gain. Smaart is designed to allow for 50x 1dB gain steps. As such – 0 dB in Smaart equals 0 dB on the EVO, however the EVO control app will show more available attenuation. If you attenuate the EVO below 0dB (as read in Smaart), that level will not be reflected in Smaarts Input Meters.

To enable Gain Tracking, this checkbox must be selected under IO Config

SPL calibration for EVO devices follows the same process as any other device being used with Smaart. To quickly determine the maximum gain adjustment error for your specific device, set input to a gain of 25 dB, then calibrate for sound level measurements using a sound level calibrator with Gain Tracking turned off. After calibrating, with the calibrator still fitted to the microphone and turned on, enable Gain Tracking and assign the input to an SPL meter in Smaart, then observe the measured level as you turn the gain up to 50, and down to 0 dB. The maximum deviation observed from the reference level of the calibrator represents the maximum expected accuracy of your setup.

Each of the EVO interfaces include an internal loop channel. This can be used to reference the signal generator of Smaart directly, without the need for an external patch cable. To configure the internal loop-back, select Use for one of the loop-back channels in the EVO input device settings. Then, in the Output tab of the I-O Config dialog, assign that same channel to be used as an output. The EVO will handle the rest, automatically sending the signal from the selected loop-back output to its corresponding loop-back input.

  • EVO 4 loopback channels are inputs 3&4
  • EVO 8 loopback channels are inputs 5&6
  • EVO 16 loopback channels are ADAT inputs 15&16

Internal Loopback channels (L and R) for the EVO 8. First, select the desired Loopback channel under the Input tab.

Then, make sure that same Loopback channel is selected under the Output tab to have the signal generator sent to it.
